About Us

IEEE stands for the “Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers”. The association is chartered under this full legal name. IEEE’s membership has long been composed of engineers and scientists. Allied professionals who are members include computer scientists, software developers, information technology professionals, physicists, and medical doctors, in addition to IEEE’s electrical and electronics engineering core. For this reason the organization no longer goes by the full name, except on legal business documents, and is referred to simply as IEEE.

The IEEE is dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence. It has about 420,000 members in about 160 countries, slightly less than half of whom reside in the United States.

IEEE Student Branch, University of Dhaka (IEEESBDU) was approved by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) on 17 Feb, 2015. This is the 14th student branch of IEEE Bangladesh Section under IEEE Region 10 (Asia Pacific). IEEESBDU started with the dream of providing all the different engineering majors of University of Dhaka with a common platform to grow and build together.

IEEESBDU started its journey with 50 enthusiastic members who believed the IEEE mission statement “advance technology for the benefit of humanity”. It has the pleasure of having Dr. Atiqur Rahman Ahad as founding Branch Counselor and Md. Zahidul Islam as founding Chair and Walid Bin Habib as founding Secretary. IEEESBDU has successfully formed its first affinity group “Women in Engineering (WIE)” on 2016 with Prof. Lafifa Jamal as Group Advisor and Tasnim Kamal as WIE Chair. In its second year since founding, IEEESBDU had 70+ members in 2016 which increased to 130 members at present.

IEEE Student Branch DU organized the largest event of IEEE Bangladesh Section: IEEE Bangladesh SYW Congress 2016 in its second operational year. The other most successful events organized by IEEESBDU were the 1st Student Conference on Science & Engineering 2015, 2nd Student Conference on Science & Engineering 2017. Numerous other technical talks, workshops & seminars were regularly organized to equip its members with skills and knowledge required for a successful engineering carrier that contributes for the betterment of the community. All these were made possible by the tremendous contribution and support of the founding members and executive committee. IEEESBDU is forever grateful to the people whose aspiration made this student branch reach where it is today.
